How Affiliate Marketing Works
Web affiliate marketing works the same way as all marketing works. According to the American Marketing Association, marketing is the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large. In other words all the stuff that goes into having someone buy something.
Because of technology, you can have customers buy products and services over the internet. This is refereed to as internet marketing. When you are selling someone else’s product over the internet this is web affiliate marketing. The thing you really need to get here is that marketing is marketing. The internet is just another media to use for marketing.
We are very familiar with other media for marketing. Take T.V. for example. We see a commercial on television and we are prompted to take some action. The same is true for radio, newspaper, telephone, magazine, airplane (commonly called aerial marketing) are all media for marketing. The same marketing principles that apply to other media apply to the internet and affiliate marketing. So in order to be a good at web affiliate marketing, you have to be a good marker.

One of the best aspects of Affiliate Marketing is not having to worry about having to provide a customer support function. Remember, the vendor, or merchant, owns the product that you’re promoting – he/she has the hassle of this.

Affiliate marketing on the surface is quite simple. It works this way. Someone else has a product or service and you sell that product or service and earn a commission. That in a nutshell is affiliate marketing. You can market affiliate products in a number of ways. It does not have to be internet marketing. Having said that internet marketing is a great way to reach a lot of people quickly, efficiently, and at relatively low cost.
The best way to market online is to set up a website and drive traffic to the website. On the website you want to have a way to capture names and email addresses so you can build a list. When you have a list you can market to those people over and over again. This is often overlooked. Let me give you an example. Let’s say you are selling electronic dog collars. You could offer a free report on how to maximize the use of the dog collar. In order to get the free report they have to give you their name and email address. Now what else could you sell to someone that is interested in dog collars? You could sell them dog training courses, dog food, dog medications, dog toys, etc. You get the idea. One customer for a dog collar could be a customer for a lot of other things.
